Bosch JS572EL 120-Volt Top-Handle Jig Saw

In July 2012, Bosch introduced this model and the Bosch JS572EB Barrel Grip as their latest top-of-the-line jigsaws. Model numbers ending in "L" (JS572EL - JS572EBL) include the L-BOXX tool case.

All professional grade jigsaws have a slotted roller for the blade to ride in, for stabilization. This Bosch saw is unique with its two slotted roller guides, one above the other - the lower roller hovers just 3/16" above the work surface. The two rollers minimize blade defection without the heat-creating friction of steel blocks pinching the blade (as in the previous model 1590), while also supporting the blade from the back. In other words, the blade is stabilized at three points, the blade holder and the two rollers.

Print out the close-up photo (from Customer Images) of the double roller and take it to Home Depot or Lowes to compare to Milwaukee, Makita, or DeWalt models with their single roller guide. I own and use numerous saws/drills/drivers of those brands, but when it comes to jigsaws, those guys are behind the times.

This new blade stability system makes for squarer cuts than jigsaws with a single blade roller guide only. E.g., my latest cut through a 2x4 was perfectly square. No jigsaw has zero blade deflection since the blade isn't supported from the "bottom" (as on a scroll saw). In fact, even on a saw this good, the blade can be made to slant to one side, IF the saw is pushed to one side while cutting, or if the blade is at all bent.

While the double roller blade control really sets this model apart from the others, there's more:

- The quick-change blade system is perfect. Move the blade lever forward and the blade pops out, avoiding having to touch a hot blade.. Push in a new "T" blade and release the lever to lock it in place. Simple and quick.

-7.2 amp motor is the most powerful of any jigsaw.

- The dual LED brightens the cut-line - has a push-button on the top-front of the handle. Hold the button down to turn the light on or push it down until it clicks to leave the light on. Very nice. Not bright enough to be a flashlight, but plenty bright for its purpose.

- My Pelouze scale shows the saw (minus the cord) weighs only 5 pounds 10 ounces, which is lighter than its predecessor with its smaller motor (how did they do that?)

- On/off switch for a sawdust blower to keep the cut line clear.

- has a 4-position blade orbit switch - different blade strokes from smooth to aggressive cuts. Choose the correct setting for the material.

- An unusually long (13 foot) flexible rubber cord, reducing the times an extension cord will be needed; plus rubber cords remain flexible in very cold temperatures.

- This kit version includes three blades, dust shroud, anti-splinter insert, dust extraction tube, a vacuum adapter, and a steel overshoe. The steel overshoe slides tightly over the non-mar plastic shoe and is designed for rough surface materials such as tile backer-board. An edge cutting and circle cutting guide are sold separately.

- The red-handled lever on the right side releases the shoe for adjusting the cutting angle. It will engage at 0 degrees, 45 degrees left, or 45 degrees right; but can be set to any angle between 45 left and 45 right. No tools are required.

- Minimal vibration (due to counterbalancing mechanism), the handle is comfortable, the accelerator trigger and other controls have no places that pinch your fingers, and it feels like a professional tool in your hands.

- The control knob at the back of the motor sets the maximum blade speed from 1 (slow) to 6 (warp speed); the trigger varies the speed from slow to that maximum setting. Electronic feedback circuitry maintains full power at all speeds. On "1", which is the slowest speed, you can almost count the blade strokes, it goes so slow. Its fastest speed is like a sewing machine on full speed. When it's running, that double roller assembly moves front to back (depending on the orbit setting) and also pivots - so both rollers always make contact with the blade. Impressive mechanics.

- Bosch makes four L-BOXX cases 14" deep by 17" wide, 4", 6" 10" or 15" high. This jigsaw comes with the 4" high L-BOXX and a molded-in tray for the jigsaw and accessories. L-BOXXes are designed for Bosch tool lovers, as they not only stack neatly, but snap (or unsnap) together with other L-BOXX cases. The box is huge for a jigsaw, but provides plenty of room for the tool and accessories. The plastic is thinner than I would have expected, however.

- Made in Switzerland.

Negatives:

- This could be the most expensive jigsaw on the market; but of course, it's the top-of-the-line model.

- The steel over-shoe is quite difficult to remove because its metal sides pinch too tightly on the plastic shoe's edge. To remove the steel shoe, I lightly hammer-tap the end of a large screw driver squarely onto the end to get it started on its way off, then, once it starts to come off, pull it off with duck-bill pliers, by grabbing at a flat spot. There seems to no other way of removing the steel overshoe except banging on it with something, which will eventually damage it or the plastic shoe.

- Right out of the box, the blade on my saw was 2 degrees out of square with the shoe. The Allen screw on the shoe's bottom allows rough adjustment only, so fine-tuning adjustments can be difficult. It took me multiple tries to adjust it to perfectly square. The instruction manual's squaring method is pretty lame, so, if the blade is NOT square to the shoe, try this:

... clamp the saw upside down in a padded (leather, rubber, etc.) wood vise with a new long blade installed.
... run the saw on slow speed until the blade is fully extended
... lock the shoe into the 90 degree position & remove the steel overshoe if that's installed (it covers the Allen screw)
... clamp a small square to the shoe, near the blade.
... via trial & error, loosen & tighten the shoe's Allen screw while adjusting the shoe - until the blade is perfectly square. (Customer Image #5)

Once the blade is squared, it should stay that way unless the tool is dropped.

Summary:

If you need (or just want) the very best jigsaw on the market, this is probably it.

The only concern is the too-tight steel over-shoe. Since I will rarely use the steel overshoe, no rating stars were deducted for this design blunder. However, for anyone who will frequently change between the plastic and steel shoe, my advice is to not buy this saw.

I had a an old Craftsman jig saw that finally went on me. The jig saw is so smooth. Out is so nice Having the t-shank blades for ease of blade change. The light helps for the late night job site work. Over all it definitely bets out my craftsman and it better than the borrowef dewalt and porter cables jigsaw s I have used.

A dream tool ! September 17, 2012

This is my very first jig saw. And I don't know why I lived without one for so long !

There is a lot of talk about double roller. Since I never used a jig saw before, I wouldn't know how single roller tool feels like, so can't tell if the double roller is any better or not ! Having said that, this jig saw is breeze to use. Very light, very powerful and very stable. And most important, it feels so safe to use. I think I will never use a circular saw again. I use circular saw ONLY to break down large sheet goods into small pieces, but I can easily do that with jig saw, too. Because I never feel safe when that circular saw blade is running.

This jig saw is top quality and blades quality is superb, too. The light is very useful to illuminate the cut line. Looks like everyone has two issues with this jig saw out of the box. First, the steel shoe is very very tight. I need a hammer to slide it in and again a hammer and screw driver to slide it out ! Hopefully over the time, it will get smoother. And second, the blade is not square to the shoe. I did losen the allen screw and after a number of trial-and-errors, managed to get it close to 90 degrees, not perfect square, but very close. At the moment I can live with that since I do not think I will be trying to make any final cuts with this jig saw. Mostly I will be making rough cuts that will be finalized with a router or a table saw.

And yes, it is very expensive, but I think worth every dollar. Hightly highly recommended !
